Guelph Chamber Choirâs Gift to Youth
December is for most in the community, a time of family gatherings to celebrate the year which has passed and to acknowledge the one ahead. Many of the youth in our care are currently living independently and do not have access to the holiday âfamilyâ dinner experience. For most of them the holiday turkey dinner, if it exists, means defrosting a frozen meal from the local supermarket. All too often they are in fact worrying if there will be enough food on hand to last over the holiday.
Thanks to the generosity of members of the Guelph Chamber Choir along with several individual donors, 40 youth living without family experienced a sumptuous turkey dinner with all the trimmings and received a stocking stuffed with gifts as a start to their Holiday Season. After consuming the donated delicacies, participants lingered over conversation with each other before departing with gifts and ample leftovers for another meal â well nourished on many levels.
The Guelph Chamber Choir emerged in 1980, when a group of choral music lovers decided that Guelph needed a choir dedicated to singing the finest works of the repertoire with skill and musical sensitivity. Conductor, Gerald Neufeld has led the choir for all but two years of its history.
Singers in the Choir represent various walks of life and hold close to the ideals of chamber singing such that the Choir remains an integral part of the strong musical heritage of Guelph. Their performances include repertoire from Renaissance masters to contemporary composers, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz and from the unaccompanied choral gems to masterworks with full orchestra.
The Guelph Chamber Choir has participated in festivals throughout Ontario and has toured Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Sweden with their success recognized through a number of broadcasts on national radio and prizes in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs.
