Volunteers are the backbone of our family support services here at Family and Children’s Services and play a vital role in children’s lives. From driving families to their doctor appointments to spending quality time with a child at the library, you can expect your time with us to be fulfilling.
Not only does it feel great to do well by these children, but it is also valuable experience for those interested in pursuing a career related to children. We want you to feel good about the work you do, and we want you to get as much out of these experiences as we and our children do.
Our volunteers play an important role in the day-to-day lives of children involved with F&CS and have a long lasting and positive impact on their future. F&CS volunteers support parents, children and youth working as:
- Mentors who are matched with children and youth who need extra support and encouragement and benefit from regular one-on-one time
- Parent Aides who partner with a parent/guardian to provide support and guidance, emotional support and practical skills.
Many other important roles including drivers, tutors and childcare assistance, as well as special assignments, administrative projects, fund-development activities/events.
Who can volunteer?
We accept applications from any individual ages 16 and over, however only volunteer 18 years or older can volunteer in the following positions: Parent-Aide, Mentor, Driver.
What are the requirements?
You must be able to commit to at least 8 months of consistent volunteering. Given the sensitive nature of the work, the children we serve need to have consistency in their relationships with our volunteers.
Is there training?
Yes. There is mandatory training three times a year that all volunteers must attend. These are great opportunities for new volunteers to get to learn their roles and to hear from past volunteers about their experiences.
What if I don’t end up liking what I’m doing?
We understand that you don’t know you don’t like something unless you try it. If you find out that you don’t like the role you are currently in, you can always let us know and we will try and find a better fit!
